7 Wonders Duel

About

A smaller, faster, and 2 player version of the popular "7 Wonders Game"

Compete with your opponent over three ages, trying to win by either the most points, militarily, or by science. While the original 7 wonders seems to shine with 3+ players this one is balanced for 2.

Thoughts

Tim:
4.5/5 An excellent game. I love the fact that you have 3 ways to win, but am a bit annoyed that 2 of the 3 are highly unlikely. The thoughts online seem to be that they exist to put pressure on your opponent more than viable winning strategies. Having only played four games at this point I'll keep an open mind. I will say that I intend to play the game more. A definite keeper. I also like the fact that you can win with a semi pacifist strategy by simply out producing your opponent instead of simply attacking them. That being, said, you will shortly come to point of having to play some good "defensive" plays to block your opponent, so if you are trying to avoid competitive games, don't be fooled.

I haven't played the original 7 Wonders, so I was interested to see how this competitive two player version will go since I have no experience with the original. Turns out my experience with other competitive deck building games helped, as I won two out of three times - however we misunderstood two of the cards which made them overpowered for the first game. The last game was noteworthy, as I had to win militarily due to Tim managing to grab all the resources I needed to build things. It became more of a strategic game where I couldn't just pick a random card, I needed to make sure my choices would later force Tim to take cards that would allow me the option to pick military cards. After two previous games where I essentially was a pacifist, it was a very different game to attempt to pick up all the military cards since Tim continually was able to pick up resource cards and the higher level victory point cards. I was essentially forced into attempting to win militarily because I couldn't keep up with victory points, resources, building wonders, and we were both constantly short on cash. Regardless, even the game I lost out of the series, it is an excellent game that has quite a bit of replayability, and I look forward to playing again.
